Greetings from Clarenville, NL where I live with my family. I am a recently retired high school principal at Clarenville High, home of the mighty Cougars!! Starting at the very young age of ten I discovered a love for basketball spending hours shooting every day on a home made basketball net. I also was lucky to have had a street light (placed by NL Power) at the base of the driveway allowing us to play long into the night!
My basketball career began in earnest when I made the varsity in my Grade 9 year at St. Francis Xavier school in Long Harbour. I loved basketball and being a solid 6ft3 with good fitness and coordination allowed me to experience success in short order on the basketball court. My teams were good but not as good as the other teams in our zone (Laval, Fatima & St. Anne's) which meant that we never made it to provincials when I was in high school. Basketball was big in our area with strong teams during those years from Arnold's Cove where the Trevor Gilbert led Mariners were super strong. Little Hearts Ease were the best from the region going undefeated one year behind 6ft10 Leon Peddle. More on these two later....
Big Doggie Evan D throwing it down!
This blog is simply a fun outlet for me to reminisce about Newfoundland & Labrador basketball in the era 1985 - 1995. I will be writing some longer stories and posting lots of quick hitters where I connect with former elite basketball players for short interviews about their love of basketball. If you have any questions or would like to find out what happened to a player from your past feel free reach out!
